Buying art?? Here are some tips ...
01/07/2010
The purchase of art is an experience that does not depend on age, budget, education or social status, it's simply a necessity to nourish our soul, to have something beautiful in our life that gives us satisfaction on different levels, something that when observing it makes us forget the difficult days, the traffic and, for a second, makes us feel good and makes us remember the important things in life.
In this blog I want to compile some advice about how to buy art which I hope is useful for those of you who want to begin your own collection:
Remember: the best reason to buy an art work is because you love it! It sounds simple, but it's the most important thing because regardless of the opinion of your friends, curator or the art expert, the person who is going to see the art work every day is you!
Make sure it's an original piece. Whether it's oil, acrylic, watercolor or bronze, it is important to make sure that the art work is an original piece from the artist and a very good way of doing that is the following step.
Make sure that the art work comes with an authenticity certificate from the artist and/or the gallery in which it is bought.
Define your taste, observe different pieces and create an eye for a specific type of art.
Investigate: Internet is a great tool for us to research on different levels; overall, it allows us to see the great variety of styles that exist.
Art fairs are an excellent option to see different styles, characteristics and prices.
Be sure to ask about shipping, if it has some extra cost, if they deliver to your house, if some installation is needed, etc.
What things come included in the price? Is the frame or the base optional?
Does it need special care? Is it an outdoors or indoors work of art?
Styles of art.... Establishing a style will make your search easier, whether you're looking for something modern, contemporary or classic.
Buying online? Why not! It's an easy way to compare and see wide selections of art without the necessity of having a curator on top of you.
Do you have a specific budget? Contact the artist, perhaps he/she will be able to give you options according to your tastes and budget.
Would you like something custom-made? There are artists who apart from their work, make custom pieces in accordance to the place in which you want to have a work of art.
I hope that these tips are useful and I'll be waiting for comments and suggestions for my next blog!
